Why visit Dinokeng?
Dinokeng’s official site describes a roughly 19,000-hectare reserve in north-eastern Gauteng, developed through collaboration between provincial government and more than 170 landowners. The reserve officially opened in 2011 and presents itself as Gauteng’s only Big Five game reserve.
The public self-drive route runs across a living conservation landscape with private properties and visitor businesses. That makes permits, gates, signs and temporary section notices part of the experience—not administrative details to solve after arrival.
Wild This Way lists Dinokeng as a field-test reserve. Public search pages do not carry exact sightings or activity totals. The official reserve website remains the authority for permits, fees, route status, gates and closures.

Picnic sites
The official site lists three self-drive picnic sites. Facilities differ, some sites are unfenced, and water is not drinkable at every stop, so check the current description and carry your own drinking water.

Open Dinokeng in the Wild This Way app while connected if you have beta access. Cached resources can help when reception drops, but only a fresh connection or reserve staff can confirm a closure or current sighting.

Carry drinking water even when planning a picnic stop. Keep a paper fallback and enough daylight to return without rushing wildlife or exceeding route limits.
